American University Association Offers Graduate Study Opportunities to Women
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is now accepting applications for their prestigious international fellowships. The deadline for the application is December 1, 2006. Dorothy Nkhota of the College of Health Sciences and Jessie Kabwira-Kapisa of Chancellor College are two women who will not be applying for the scholarship this year.
Both women applied for the scholarship last year, and both women received the fellowship and are now enrolled in important graduate studies in the United States. Dorothy Nkhota, lecturer at the College of Health Sciences, is in Indiana studying for her M.S. in Science Education. Jessie Kabwira-Kapisa, lecturer at Chancellor College, is studying for her PhD in comparative literature in New York. They have both found their universities to be supportive and challenging.
The fellowship process is very competitive. In 2005, over 700 applicants, from 102 countries applied to AAUW. Mrs. Nkhota and Mrs. Kawira-Kapisa were two of only 51 women chosen to receive the award. They both worked closely with the U.S. Embassy’s Educational Advising Center and the Cultural Affairs section throughout the application process.
Malawian women who are interested in applying can access application materials at http://www.aauw.org/fga/fellowships_grants/international.cfm. .
