Malawi Reselected for Second MCC Compact
Washington, D.C. -- The U.S. Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Board of Directors at its quarterly meeting held on December 9, has reselected Malawi as eligible to continue the process of developing compacts in fiscal year 2010. The Board reviewed the progress of its partnerships with countries to reduce poverty through economic growth and agreed to reselect Malawi.
The MCC Board of Directors first selected Malawi as compact eligible for fiscal year 2008 and 2009. The Government of Malawi established a core team last year, and the team has worked closely with Washington-based MCC officials and a wide range of Malawian stakeholders to make substantial progress toward development of an MCC compact.
In making its decisions for country selection, the Board considers a wide range of factors. An important measure that informs the Board’s decision is the policy performance of candidate countries using 17 indicators in three areas—Ruling Justly, Investing in People, and Encouraging Economic Freedom. These indicators measure countries’ demonstrated commitment to policies that promote, among other things, political and economic freedom, investments in education and health care, control of corruption, and respect for civil liberties and the rule of law.
“MCC embraces President Obama’s commitment to fighting global poverty. We continue to work with Members of Congress to seek sufficient resources for MCC to fulfill our long-term economic development partnerships with some of the poorest countries in the world,” said newly sworn MCC’s new Chief Executive Officer, Daniel W. Yohannes.
