International Visitor Leadership Program Returnee to strengthen Volunteerism in Malawi
Ms. Sitabene Malange, Program Coordinator for Eye of the Child, recently returned from the International Visitors Leadership Program “NGO Management.” The participants observed innovative management strategies of U.S.-based NGOs, advocacy organizations and the spirit of public service in the U.S. They examined how U.S. NGOs strengthen leadership, by using volunteers and fundraising initiatives. Ms. Malange spoke highly of the spirit of volunteerism and transparency in the U.S. She commented that Malawian leaders should work to strengthen the spirit of volunteerism: “people need to believe that something can work without money from external funding.” Ms. Malange intends to use Eye of the Child, Government of Malawi and other NGOs to establish databases at various recruitment centers around the country where youth can register for volunteer services to work on various projects that will develop their communities.
Ms. Malange commented that the program broadened her understanding of U.S. culture, society and its democratic values, and plans to share her experience with the 40 NGOs that are members of the Malawi Confederation of Non Governmental Organizations.
