MUSEAA stages ‘Love Wounds’ in Mzuzu

The Malawi-U.S. Exchange Alumni Association (MUSEAA) recently sponsored the production of an original stage play, “Love Wounds,” as part of MUSEAA’s project on drug and alcohol abuse.  MUSEAA engaged a Lilongwe theatre group, Artistic Agency, to produce and perform the play in Mzuzu.  “Love Wounds” will have a second run in Lilongwe in June to commemorate the UN’s International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

“Love Wounds” is the story of Tinyade, a woman who is in an abusive marriage and faces constant battering by her drunken husband Oscar.  They have a daughter Carol, who resorts to substance abuse in order to cope with the difficult situation at home.  “Love Wounds” uses drama, song and dance not only to demonstrate the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, but also to provide a positive message on how to seek help and stop the downward spiral.

Speaking to an audience of 60 people, Public Affairs Officer John Warner said, “The message is clear -- there is a real problem of drug and alcohol abuse out there, but more importantly there is something that can be done about it,”  He added, “The damage of drug and alcohol abuse is not limited to you -- it can devastate those around you as well.”

PAO Warner said he could not be more proud to be associated with the work of MUSEAA, whose membership includes lawyers, judges, medical practitioners, health professionals, academicians, business leaders and other high profile professionals.

MUSEAA is a dynamic group of Malawians who over the years have returned from U.S. Government-sponsored professional exchange programs.  It is implementing an awareness raising project on drug and alcohol abuse with a particular focus on the correlation to domestic abuse.

MUSEAA was established to provide a forum for internal and external networking among all U.S. exchange alumni while contributing to matters of national development using lessons learned from United States exchange programs.  MUSEAA receives support from State Department Alumni Affairs Division through the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Malawi
