Malawi's MCC Concept Papers Near Completion
U.S. Ambassador
Peter Bodde lauded the leadership of the Malawi Government and the
progress of Malawi’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Core Team
in developing a concept papers indicating the sectors and outlining
specific projects that MCC assistance would address. Ambassador Bodde
made his remarks at an MCC National Forum in Lilongwe on February 25.
Ambassador
Bodde said Malawi was well on its way to finalizing a compact and that
the MCC Malawi Core Team’s progress has been faster than many other MCC
countries. He said that in earning eligibility for MCC assistance,
Malawi had met the demanding criteria of ruling justly, investing in
its people and promoting economic freedom for the last two years.
Ambassador Bodde added, “Malawi needs to continue to demonstrate its
commitment to good governance and it must do so in a very challenging
period over the coming months.”
Ambassador Bodde expressed
optimism that Malawi would demonstrate good governance through the
holding a free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections. He
noted that the Malawian Electoral Commission (MEC) had worked hard to
lay the foundation for free and fair elections, saying “I especially
commend their successful voter registration drive. Their efforts in
this regard are noteworthy and we wish the Commission members success
as it continues its work to ensure a free, fair and credible election.”
After broad-based consultations with all sectors of Malawian
society and government, the MCC team is nearing completion of concept
papers that establish the energy and transport sectors as the two
primary areas for MCC project assistance.
Malawi qualified for MCC Compact Status in December 2007 and the MCC Core Team was established in March 2008.
