U.S. Embassy Announces 2014 Diversity Visa Lottery Season

By Chifundo Kachali

The U.S. Embassy in Lilongwe has announced the commencement of the online registration for the 2014 Diversity Visa Lottery on October 2, 2012 which will end on November 3.

In a press statement, the embassy says all entries must be made at the website, all interested applicants are advised to closely read the instructions on the website before submitting their applications.

“Starting May 1, 2013, applicants can check the status of their entry on the given website. This entry status check is the sole method notifying applicants that they have been selected to proceed with their diversity visa application,” reads the statement.

Lottery entrants selected are provided further instructions, including information on fees connected with immigration to the U.S. on this website; and those selected in the random drawing are not notified by email.

The embassy urges all entrants to use caution when dealing with any company or organizations other than the U.S. Government because there have been instances of fraudulent websites posing as official U.S. Government sites claiming to have information or visas for winners of the Diversity Visa Lottery.

The statement further observes that some websites charge for forms and information about immigration procedures, which are available free of charge on the Department of State website.

The embassy has encouraged the public to be wary of sending any personal information that may be used for identity theft to these websites.
