The Embassy of the United States of America welcomes proposals for funding under the Ambassador’s Special Self-Help Fund.  A program of the United States Government, the Fund seeks to support and economically empower rural community-based organizations.  In Malawi, the Fund aims to improve basic social and economic conditions in communities through established community groups.  Grants typically range from US$2,000 to US$8,000.

Eligibility

The project initiative should come primarily from community action.  Initiatives sponsored and assisted by credible development institutions, organizations or other sources outside the community are especially encouraged.  Projects must involve a self-help contribution of labor and/or materials freely given by members of the local community.  This contribution should be worth at least 25% of the total project value upon completion.  Project categories include construction projects, water-related projects, durable equipment, environmental conservation projects, income-generating activities and health-related projects.  All applications must be completed on a standard format available on request.

Time Frame

The deadline for receiving FY2011 proposals is February 28, 2012.  Use the 2009 revised grant application form.  Application forms are available upon request to

LilongweSHF@state.gov or by fax to 01-770-076.  Application forms can also be collected at the U.S. Embassy during working hours.  Applications received by the U.S. Embassy after the closing date will not be considered.  Due to the large number of applications we receive, we are only able to respond to short-listed applicants.  Any applicant who does not receive feedback by April 30, 2012 should consider their proposal unsuccessful.  Applications may be submitted by fax, mail, scanned e-mail, or hand-delivery to the American Embassy in Lilongwe.
