What is a Visa?
A citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa. This visa can be a nonimmigrant visa for a temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence.
A visa is issued by a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. A visa entitles the holder to travel to the United States and apply for admission; it does not guarantee entry. An officer of the Immigration and Naturalization Service at the port of entry determines the visa holder's eligibility for admission into the United States.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
NON-IMMIGRANT VISA APPLICATION FEE INCREASE
Effective January 1, 2008, the application fee for a United States non-immigrant visa will increase from $ 100.00 to $ 131.00. This increase allows the Department to recover the costs of security and other enhancements to the non-immigrants visa application process.
Do not wait until the last minute! Inform yourself of visa application requirements and apply for your visa in advance of your planned travel dates. Everyone applying for a visa, including applicants renewing a visa, is required to appear in person at the US Embassy.
